Final Burnett vs Rizzo Debate Thursday at Scuola Vita Nuova

Please come to the final debate Thursday evening. This will be the last time that I will share the stage with John Rizzo in this never ending election campaign. This will be our fourth joint appearance in the four years he has been running against me. Would have been five but he stood us up for one debate.

Scuola Vita Nuova at 544 Wabash will be host for the debate between State Rep John Burnett and his third time challenger Johnny Joe Rizzo
    7 p. m.

The charter school, Scuola Vita Nuova , at 544 Wabash (Independence Avenue and Wabash) will be the host for this year's election debate which is sponsored by the League of Women Voters

The League sponsors debates in several districts each election and has conducted this event twice in the past for this race, although Rizzo only has shown up once. The second time I responded to an empty chair and answered questions from the audience. So, even if he does not show up again I promise I will be there to answer the questions from the audience.

The format is that each candidate gets to make an opening and closing statement and respond in turn to questions posed by the moderator from those submitted by the audience. The event normally lasts one hour.

Political leaders from around the city will be there and our community turnout will reflect how involved we are in the political process. A large turnout will get the attention of the leaders and make our voice stronger.

11th Ward Democrat Committeeman and Committeewoman have a new billboard at Independence Avenue at Askew

Carol Royster is running for reelection to the 11th Ward Democrat Committeewoman post. No surprise there. She, like her husband Will, has been active in the community for years and has been our Democrat Committeewoman.

But now The Big Surprise. Her husband Will Royster, son of our former State Representative, is running against Johnny Joe Rizzo for the 11th Ward Democrat Committeeman position. That's right John Rizzo is not only challenging John Burnett he has also simultaneously filed for election as the Democrat Committeeman.

The Eleventh Ward is comprised mainly of Columbus Park, Pendelton Heights, and Scarritt Renaissance neighborhoods. The people who vote at Don Bosco, Garfield School, St. Anthony church and at the Kansas City Museum will vote in these races.

Here is an excerpt from the Royster campaign flyer:

"Will was a Navy Lieutenant Commander and carrier-based attack pilot. With 43 successful Combat missions in Desert Storm, and more than 500 carrier landings, he knows how to handle stress under pressure. He was consistently ranked as a top performing officer throughout the Pacific Fleet for his leadership, valor and integrity. Trust Him!"

"As your current 11th Ward Committee-woman, Carol has consistently represented your best interests. As a State Democratic Convention Delegate and as an assistant Democratic Committee Event Organizer, she insured that the 11th Ward was consistently well represented in all political circles. She has served as Cultural Arts Commissioner, Kansas City Museum Lecture Series Presenter, and as a Sponsor for our traditional "Safe Halloween"."

Although there is no debate scheduled you will have the chance to meet the Roysters before and after the event Thursday evening.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve,

    State Rep John Burnett

July 21: More Endorsements, Campaign Reports Filed

I am proud to say that education endorsements just keep coming in for my reelection campaign. Here are some of the most recent:

    Teachers choose Burnett

I am proud that education groups have all chosen to endorse me in my bid for reelection to my fourth and final term in the Missouri House.

    The largest group, the
Missouri National Education Association, led the way. Here is the link to the full endorsement list.

Campaign Finance Reports filed - Burnett leading on paper

The Burnett campaign filed the required report this week with the Missouri Ethics Commission showing who donated and how the money was spent. The report showed Burnett raised $40,720 this quarter. Added to the previous balance the total thus far is $60,600. This puts the campaign within striking distance of reaching the budget set for the race.

Over 200 individuals contributed to the total. This includes $2,960 from 16 online donors through the Democratic fundraising website
Act Blue. Here is the link to contribute online:

    Act Blue Contribute Button

My opponent reported $975 total contributions and an $18,000 loan from himself. Rizzo's contributors included two local lawyers and a construction company owner. In the past two challenges virtually all the Rizzo campaign money has come from personal loans that are then forgiven after the race so it is difficult to gauge how much money will be spent until it happens.

Pro-Vote Coalition Group rates Burnett 100%

Pro-Vote is a statewide coalition of 40 labor unions and community groups founded in 1992 who rate legislators for their performance on progressive issues.

    Candidate Forum Wednesday, July 9th

Please join us Wednesday evening at 7:00 P.M. for a candidate forum sponsored by Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association and the Northeast News.

I and my perennial challenger John Rizzo will be there to speak and answer questions for the audience.

The four Jackson County Sheriff candidates have been invited and will also have the opportunity to speak to the voters and respond to questions.

These forums have been quite popluar and have put Historic Northeast on the political map of Kansas City in recent years. During the Mayors race last year there were spirited debates. And two years ago voters got to hear the same challenger, John Rizzo, take his second try against me. This will be his third try in three elections.

    Happy Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July to all our friends. The Fourth is a wonderful holiday for our family and for our country. As we celebrate our freedoms we are reminded that this country was founded by our ancestors who were striving to make the world a better place for their children. We are so fortunate to be a part of this great country and enjoy the freedoms that our forefathers fought for.

Our family gathered today and celebrated like so many. I hope that we can remember those who have given so much for the freedoms we enjoy. We have so much in the United States that other countries do not have. We should all take a moment to give thanks to God for all his blessings we enjoy in this great nation.

Ingrid and I wish you and your family a Happy and safe Fourth of July.
